Postdoctoral Researcher, MPI-MMG (Germany) in collaboration with researchers from Oxford (UK)


The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (MPI-MMG), Germany, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford, seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background in social psychology.
The position is available for 2 years, with an anticipated starting date of 1st December 2012 (or shortly thereafter).
The successful applicant will be based at the MPI-MMG in Göttingen, Germany, but will work as part of a collaborative research project led jointly by Miles Hewstone (University of Oxford), Katharina Schmid (University of Oxford) and Steve Vertovec (Director of the MPI-MMG). The research project, entitled ?Diversity and social identity complexity', seeks to study the relationship between neighborhood diversity, social identity complexity and intergroup relations in London (and likely also Frankfurt). The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project, including management of a large- scale longitudinal survey.
The successful applicant will be expected to satisfy the following selection criteria:
* PhD in Social Psychology (or closely related discipline)
* Demonstrated knowledge of social psychological research on social identity and intergroup relations, ideally with knowledge of and interest in research on multiple social identities and social identity complexity
* Familiarity with inter-disciplinary research on diversity and its consequences for intergroup relations
* Proven research skills and research methods, ideally in each of the following areas: quantitative research, survey research
* A publication record appropriate to the number of years that have elapsed since award of the Ph.D
* Experience analysing quantitative data using advanced statistical methods (e.g. structural equation modeling, multi-level modeling, longitudinal methods)
* Experience managing and working with large datasets
* Expert knowledge of standard statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS)
* Experience with specialist statistical software packages (e.g., Mplus, Lisrel, EQS
* Fluency in English (both spoken and written)

The ability to speak German is an advantage, but not a requirement for this position. Salary and benefits are according to the German public service pay scale (TVÖD Bund).
